Chocolates For Good Health
 

Chocolates are a universal favorite all over the world for young and old alike. The main ingredient of chocolates is cocoa which is obtained from cocoa pods - the fruit of the cacao plant. The extract from the cocoa pod is very bitter and also has a pungent taste. This is processed by different methods like roasting to make it into the chocolate that we eat.

 

Chocolate which is not processed is healthier than processed chocolate as a lot of nutrients are lost during processing. Chocolates can be enjoyed as a candy or a bar of chocolate or in the form of cakes, ice-cream, puddings and hot chocolate drinks. Dark chocolate especially, has many health benefits.

 

Chocolates are said to have more antioxidants than even red wine which is considered to be one of the largest sources of antioxidants. Antioxidants are essential for the body as they help to fight free radicals which cause ageing. They also increase the body’s immunity against diseases.  Thus a regular intake of a piece of chocolate or a chocolate drink can keep you looking young and in good health.

 

Chocolates are Good For The Heart

 

Although chocolates contain cocoa butter and are considered to be fatty foods, they are not harmful for the heart. Cocoa butter contains oleic acid which is a mono unsaturated fat that is also present in olive oil. Oleic acid raises the level of good cholesterol in the body. The other two fatty acids in cocoa butter are stearic acid and palmitic acid which too are not harmful for the heart. But we must remember to opt for dark chocolate as much as possible because it is richer in antioxidants and oleic acid than milk chocolate. Chocolates also contain flavinoids which are said to relax blood vessels and reduce blood pressure. This indirectly makes chocolates beneficial for the heart.

 

Apart from its health benefits, chocolates have a very good effect on the brain. Due to their heavenly taste, chocolates can help to ease depression and give a good feeling. A mug of hot chocolate can help to energize you as chocolate contains harmless amounts of caffeine.

Also opt for dark chocolate which is low on sugar and milk to get all its benefits.
